ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – School staffers in the Commonwealth are being recognized for their creative efforts to feed more kids a nutritious breakfast each school day.
The Farms to Food Banks program has received special grant funding from the Educational Foundation of America to support the Appalachian Expansion Project which will allow local farmers to be paid to provide produce for food banks.
Food insecurity is a reality for one in 10 residents age 60 and older. Elder refugees in Kentucky face an even higher risk of hunger due to language barriers and lack of transportation.
The organization previously called the Kentucky Association of Food Banks has a new name and it’s pledging to continue initiatives to alleviate food insecurity. But even with the continuing support of many state leaders, the initiatives aren’t making much of a dent in the state’s problem with hunger.
