Free School Meals Extended, But KY Food Banks Expect Rise in Need
Karena Cash, Advocacy Coordinator for Feeding Kentucky, said she believes the situation will worsen, as it becomes clear lawmakers won’t pass the next federal coronavirus relief package until after the election. As rent relief runs out and eviction moratoriums expire, she said, more families are in danger of skipping meals to cover housing and utility expenses.
“And people are willing to defer those payments for food in order to make sure there’s a roof over their head, so rent relief is huge,” she said. “The longer we push the federal relief package down the road, the more families in Kentucky are going to suffer.” (more…)
Study shows nutrition education for low-income people in eight Southeast states resulted in healthier diets and better budgeting
“Healthy foods can be expensive, and a SNAP budget is modest. But SNAP-Ed is helping low-income Americans in the Southeast make strategic choices that stretch their food dollars and empower them to choose more fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods,” Amy DeLisio, director of the Public Health Institute’s Center for Wellness and Nutrition and co-author of the study, said in a news release. Four Rivers Wildlife: Hunting for the Hungry
During 2019, Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry collected over 85,000 pounds of venison from 2100 deer, producing 343,000 meals for Murray’s Need Line and other food banks and organizations like Dare to Care, Feeding Kentucky, and the Department of Agriculture’s Hunger Initiative. That isn’t enough to solve Kentucky’s hunger problem, but it is a tremendous start in the right direction. (more…)
