SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM FOR KIDS
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) — A federal program to help no kid go hungry in the summer kicked off in Kentucky Monday. While most kids are excited when summer break comes around, some are worried where their next meal will come from.“There’s no reason at all for any kid to be hungry or to need a meal,” says Amy Hockensmith with Franklin County Public Schools.
Farmers needed for Farms to Food Banks program
Feeding Kentucky, formerly known as the Kentucky Association of Food Banks, is calling on Kentucky farmers to participate. The program works to reduce food waste by rescuing cosmetically blemished produce and distributing it to Kentuckians at risk of hunger. It covers a farmer’s cost of picking, packing and transporting produce from the field to a regional food bank in Kentucky, according to a news release.
Kentucky’s older adults lack nutrition, food security
Kentucky has the nation’s highest rate of food insecurity among residents 50 to 59 years old, according to Feeding America’s first-time effort to document hunger in older adults.
Nearly 19 percent of the state’s older adults are food insecure, and another 9 percent are “very low food secure.” The national rates were 11 and 5 percent, respectively.
