Feeding Kentucky puts healthy-but-imperfect produce on the plates of people in need
In LaRue County in central Kentucky, a third-generation farmer is transferring ripe tomatoes from vine to box to truck.
Some of the tomatoes have blemishes and would not be a shopper’s first choice at the supermarket. But they are 90% perfect, edible and healthy, and these boxes are headed into the hands—and bellies—of people in need.
SNAP cuts set to strain KY budget, may impact schools
Kentucky faces deep cuts to a key food support program with the passage of the budget reconciliation bill.
It is estimated the new budget will kick millions off the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, and shift food and administrative costs onto states.
Federal food assistance changes could hit Kentucky hard
Nearly 600,000 Kentuckians got help buying food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in June 2025, according to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
But the program, better known as SNAP, faces an uncertain future after Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping and controversial tax and spending package.
