Despite decrease, child food insecurity remains widespread
In Kentucky, nearly one in five children does not know where his or her next meal will come from.
Although the rate of food insecurity has been on a downward trend in Kentucky over the last three years, according to Feeding America’s 2019 Map the Meal Gap study, the rate remains more severe for children than adults.
Families Across KY Unable to Afford Food, Many Don’t Qualify for Assistance
BEREA, Ky. – More than 600,000 Kentuckians, many of them children, are going hungry, according to a new “Map the Meal Gap” report by the group Feeding America.
The report, which looked at food insecurity in all 120 counties in the state, found Magoffin County had the highest rate of food insecurity, at 22.5%.
Oldham County had the least number of people going hungry, at 7.6%.
Report: Kentucky’s food insecurity rate higher than national average
BEREA, Ky. (WKYT) – A new report shows Kentucky children are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity.
The report by Feeding America was released Wednesday. The group identifies food insecurities across the country in its “Map the Meal Gap 2019” report.
At 14.9%, the report shows Kentucky’s food-insecurity rate is higher than the national rate of 12.5%.
It also shows the food-insecurity rate for Kentucky children is 18%.
