Afterschool Meals Reduce Childhood Hunger in Kentucky, Promote Healthy Growth and Development

Frankfort, KY-20,164 low-income children benefited from afterschool suppers on an average weekday in Kentucky in October 2019. This is a 17 percent increase from the previous year, according to Afterschool Suppers: A Snapshot of Participation,  a new report from the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC, a national anti-hunger advocacy group). The report measures how many children participated in the Afterschool Supper Program and Afterschool Snack Program, nationally and by state.

‘All walks of life’: Food insecurity higher amongst older adults and children in KY

With around 622,360 people in Kentucky labeled as food insecure — lacking reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food — 18.6% of those are ages 50 to 59, making the commonwealth the highest-ranked for food insecurity in this age range in the nation, according to a Feeding America Report.

According to Tamara Sandberg, the executive director of Feeding Kentucky, the increase in food instability among the older generation is affected by many different scenarios or lifestyle changes. (more…)
